Comprehension- SCGS 2008 Paper 2

1.  Caffeine is a substance newly discovered in coffee and tea.
2. It was found recently at that time and people did not know what it was.
3. Without Caffeine to keep us awake, the 24-hour society of the developed world could not exist.
4. In the ancient world, the sun and the season dictated  the sleep patterns of people.
5. Caffeine keeps them from falling asleep and increase their alertness.
6. This shows that he is a determined person.
7. Red Bull was a new product and unfamiliar to people.
8. The research is based on the amount of caffeine taken.
9. From the passage, I think that the writer approves of the consumption of caffeine in moderate amounts. The writer provided explanations regarding caffeine intake and that moderate amounts will not do much harm.

Research on caffeine consumption has shown that caffeine in high doses raises blood pressure therefore, increases the risk of heart diseases. However, this is only temporary.  Studies show that people who consume caffeine have higher rates of kidney and bladder cancer, fibrocrystic breast disease, pancreatic cancer and osteoporosis. Caffeine have a definite impact on mental and physical functions and that it stimulates the central nervous system as well as improving physical performance. Caffeine also increases calcium loss but is just a small effect. Studies also show that it can help relieve pain, thwart migraine headaches, reduce asthma symptoms and elevate mood. It can also increase alertness, cognition and reaction speed.
